Bad Baseball Free Agent Signings as of 12/10/03

Since Hugh Hewitt is looking for a new sports analyst I volunteer for baseball. There's been quite a few free agent signings during this off-season, some are good and some are bad.

Kelvim Escobar - Angels (3 years / $18.75 million) - the guy has some good K totals but his ERA was over 4 and allowed more hits than IPs. I just can't believe how much the Angels overpaid for this guy. Well at least Colon was a much better signing.

Fernando Vina - Tigers (2 years / $6 million) - In 4 of the last 9 years Vina has played less than 120 games. Pretty good player when healthy but for a guys who's supposed to be fast he has way too many caught stealings.

LaTroy Hawkins - Cubs (3 years / $11 million) - For a middle reliever, DANG LaTroy, you scored. A darn good pitcher but the Cubs had better hope the Joe Borowski can continue to be the closer. If not, bad payroll move.

Almost any Yankee middle reliever - lots of age and/or injuries. George is in charge. Enough said.
