Bad Management

As I'm catching up on my spam-mail I was following the Dodgers-Pirates game on espn.com. It was the debut of Brad Penny as a Dodger and he pitched an amazing game. To my amazement, the Dodger manager yanked Penny after 8 innings and only 100 pitches with a 3-0 lead. He brought in Eric Gagne who pitched 3 innings just 2 days ago. Gagne proceeded to barely hold on for a 3-2 victory. Some things:

  • Why yank a pitcher who's pitching a shutout after 8 innings?
  • Why bring in your star closer when he just threw 3 innings 2 days earlier?
  • Why bring in your overworked closer with a 3 run lead and nobody on?

    I just don't get it.

Pitch count? Or maybe it is one of those Managerial Things which you and I will never understand, being baseball laity and all.

The Yankees right now would kill (figure of speech) for a starter who could go eight innings and hold the opposing team to, say, double-digits.

Being from Pittsburgh, my guess is because it was the Pirates :)
