One Thing I'm Very Thankful For

I'm very thankful for Christian teachers who stay in public schools. For many of them it can be uncomfortable but I appreciate your staying power more than you can know. May God bless you this Thanksgiving.

What exactly did you think happens to Christian teachers in public schools? In my own Orange County, Calif., if I were to wager a guess, maybe 90 something percent of the teachers in the local elementary school would label themselves as "Christian." Is there something that the less-than-10% group of Jews, agnostics, Muslims, and Whatevers other teachers doing something mean to the overwhelming majority?

I guess I should have clarified it as "practicing Christian", one who isn't just born into a faith but actually believes and takes it seriously. It is not 90%. It's closer to 10%.

I think that's a good distinction. I personally find there are a number of people who label themselves "Christians," but seem to spend very little time working at it, or even thinking about it. Jesus and prayer seems almost to be a kind of "wishing well" when the shallow Christian needs something.

But if you can, please explain more. Suppose there is a devout, practicing elementary school Christian teacher. What in the school day would cause her discomfort?

I ask partially because of the flip side scenario. I have a close friend who went through Catholic school for 12 years. She had Jewish teachers and non-religious teachers who didn't seem to have any problem with working at the Catholic schools---elementary and high school.

Tom,

One of the things that many Christians do is not engage the public schools. So many really good teachers stay in Christian schools when they are needed out in the real world.

Excellent point. I know this sounds like tired liberalism, but I believe it. Diversity is a good thing when it comes to any public institution or local government.
