Say 'No' to Fear on Halloween

Purpose Driven Life

This much I know: Regardless of where you land on the trick-or-treating thing, if there is anything believers should not participate in today, it's not trick-or-treating: It's fear. Christians have no business being afraid today or any day. We worship the God of the universe who is over all powers and authorities and rulers on earth, above it or "below" it. If we as Christians show fear to the world, it comes as a disgrace to God. What does it say about the reality of God in our lives when we allow fear to motivate us?

Yes! I agree! I was just thinking about this earlier today, we are free and are not under the law. WE should not fear anything or anyone evil, they should fear us. We walk in victory, and I am going to shine Christ's love with non-saved family while they trick or treat, instead of painting a goody-good picture of a Christianity they already perceive as a religion that somehow disdains fun activities.

I have to confess. I don't like halloween.

However, as a Christian, I am told not to "isolate" my faith. I am also told not to become part of the world that rejects Christ and God's Word, the Bible. We are to "insulate" ourselves from the darkness of evil, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't boldly proclaim the Gospel of Christ with non-believers. Our Great Commission calling is to influence the world and we are to infiltrate the world with the Gospel of Christ.

I take this night as a subtle opportunity to witness to others. As the children choose their big candy bars from the bowl, I place a "Lord of the Rings" or "Tower Power" tract into their bag and tell them that it is something that they can read later.

In past years, I have seen some of the tracts torn up and/or thrown on my driveway the next day. But that's O.K. Most of them end up going home with the children and who knows where sharing the Gospel of Christ in this way might lead?

When they say, "happy halloween", I respond with, "have fun, be safe, and God bless."

We can be a light in the darkness.

There goes the doorbell again!
