Surfer Arrested in Galveston

Tip to Drudge

local6.com - News - Surfer Arrested Off Shore Of Galveston As Rita Approaches

A surfer off the shore of Galveston, Texas, was arrested Friday for not adhering to evacuation orders and surfing the large waves created by an approaching Hurricane Rita, according to a Local 6 News report.

My first thought was just leave this guy alone but further thought was that this guy is a distruption. One of the reasons for mandatory evacuations is to make sure the first responders have less people to worry about when the storm hits. This surfer guy probably things that he's not affecting anyone but if he got stuck when the storm hit then he'd cause a first responder to rescue him. I know, some will say he shouldn't be rescues but that is not reality. He would be rescues because that is the type of country America is; we don't turn a blind eye, even to the stupid.

Current Status of Rita - As Of 9/21 8:21 PM

Hurricane Rita becomes a 175-mph monster - Just some quick facts, in simplified form, about the current status of Hurricane Rita:

  • Right now, probably as strong as Hurricane Andrew from 1992
  • The warm ocean water in the gulf actually helps to fuel Rita that makes it stronger - currently 175 MPH
  • Projected to hit Texas on Saturday
  • Galveston, low-lying parts of Corpus Christi, Houston and New Orleans have mandatory evacuation orders
  • It's about 570 miles SE of Galveston and moving at 9 MPH

These are the facts as of Wednesday night. This looks real bad right now and the anxiety must be at extremely high level. Major prayers are needed; first that Rita would go away but if not that the people will be comforted through the impending disaster and lives will be spared.
