MSNBC – Junk food makes up quarter of U.S. diet

Nobody loves junk food more than me but we all must do better in this area, especially with our children. People getting about 7% of their calories from soda is just not good. That’s 100% sugar. I highly recommend switching to diet soda or just cutting it out all together. Switching to diet is very hard but if you grunt it out (I switched back in the days of Tab) you can save a lot of calories.

Also, if drinking fruit juices make sure they are 100% juice.

re: “Also, if drinking fruit juices make sure they are 100% juice.”

You know the little marketing trick that they used to get me on was the big label item that says “100%” in big big letters, then in tiny letters “daily requirement of Vitamin C.” Which is not of course the same as 100% juice. You can take a can of Pepsi, dissolve a vitamin C tablet in it, and chug it, but that doesn’t make it good for you.

I actually am awfully suspicious of too much government intrusion in our lives, but maybe there’s something to the regulations to ban soda machines from public schools.

It is worthy also, to note that this 100% sugar, is unnatural sugar to boot. Tropicana fresh sqeezed OJ is a pretty good natural sugar source. There are few choices like that. Most are from concentrate with added sugar and water.

If the Atkin’s Diet did nothing else, it surely raised issues about bad sugars/carbs.

I think white sugar and white flour are very destructive to our bodies. Basically because they are not in their true form and have things taken out and things put in, until the original form i.e., pure cane sugar and whole grain flour. are lifeless and void of nutrition. Causing a host of ailments, if the truth be known.

But, alas, sugar is a multi-billion dollar business. It looks good and taste good and they want to sell it to us. After all, we deserve to indulge once in a while. Sadly, though, Americans indulge all too frequently.

And sugar is cheap, just like fat, and it is made ready to order. It is just what makes up the American lifestyle and sadly, we are dying in droves from it’s over-use.

We all know how to eat healthy, most of us just cannot afford it because it is so expensive. Plus, it is inconvenient because we have to prepare it. It doesn’t mix with our fast-paced lifestyle.

So, we try to eat healthy as we can. Sodapop is an addiction for many. I know that I crave it. Diet is just not the same. And then here again, we have Aspertame, which we do not know the long term effects of that, either.

I’d say eat what we can, in all moderation, and remember to pray and give thanks. God will do the rest. :oP
