SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Features -- SDMA honors: Pre-eminence locally shared Congratulations to Switchfoot for "Album of the Year" for "Oh! Gravity." and to Molly Jenson for "Best Acoustic". Switchfoot is probably used to all the by now but I'm so happy for Molly Jenson. She is such a great person and an amazing artist. Please check out her MySpace page. Nickel Creek -- Calling It Quits Dearest Listener, After seven years of extensive touring in support of three records (seventeen years as a band), we've decided to take a break of indefinite length at the end of 2007 to preserve the environment we've sought so hard to create and to pursue other interests. It has been a pleasure to write, record, and perform for you through the years and we'd like to heartily thank you for your invaluable contribution to our musical lives. Yours, Nickel Creek my best wishes to them. they have made incredible music that should never be forgotten. get their albums and go see them in their last year of touring! Another local San Diego musician is in the spotlight. His name is Phil Wickham. Please take a listen to him here then please vote for him at this artist spotlight poll. Molly Jenson at Borders in Carmel Mountain Ranch I'm hoping to make it tonight to the Borders in Carmel Mountain Ranch (San Diego) to see Molly Jenson. It's free and will be worth the trip and time. Waking Ashland is a band from San Diego, California....or maybe Boston...or Los Angeles...shoot. Who knows where they're from. They originated one place, the guitar player is from The east coast, the singer from the west...but the music is from the heart. Ok, well that was a lame way to start a review. How about I just talk about the music. You may remember me talking about these guys before. It's true, I'm a fan. I think it's important to get the buzz out about them because they are doing something I believe in. And...moving on. This band already has an EP, a full album, a large number of tours, and international fans under their belt. There's no doubt that people like this band. It's hard not to like them. It's easy to throw in their cd, and listen from start to finish, singing along the entire time. Their new EP "Telescopes" is no different. The songs are more heart-felt than ever, and not to the point of annoying emo lyrics. These are lyrics you can relate to: slow wins the race, but i'm always rushing/try to escape the monster I've become/some days I try, and others just pass on by/the mountain so high, but I must climb so please know, that I'm waiting for you/and please be by my side/I'll make a move, if you swear to catch me/I look to the sky -from the song "Tortoise And The Hare" Lead singer, Jonathan Jones, gives an open look at the journey his heart has taken since writing the last album. It's evident he has been on a roller coaster of feelings and experiences. Moving from Christian indie label Tooth and Nail to mainstream indie label Immortal Records, Waking Ashland is sure to get more exposure, better tours, and a much larger crowd at shows. Pre-Order their new EP from Immortal Records and get an autographed poster AND the EP will be in your mailbox before the release date. Here's your link: Pre-Order TELESCOPES by Waking Ashland Trust me, you'll love what you hear. As an owner of this cd, I personally vouch for it's quality of content. I wouldn't pass up a chance to hear this band. www.myspace.com/WAKINGASHLAND is a good place to start if you want to sample some tunes. keep rocking, found on NationalGeographic.com Attention "American Idol": Hits Are Tough to Predict February 13, 2006 -- The judges on the hit reality TV show American Idol are supposed to be able to use their experience and shrewd ears to suss out the next great pop star. But predicting which artists will top the charts and which will flop is a crapshoot, a new study suggests. Which songs wind up getting attention has something to do with quality—a tone-deaf singer with no rhythm is unlikely to be a hit. But because fans often influence each other, almost anything can happen, the study suggests. To test how songs win over listeners, researchers at New York's Columbia University set up a Web site called Music Lab. More than 14,000 volunteers logged on and were able to listen to songs donated by 48 virtually unknown bands. The researchers solicited most of the participants through a teen-interest Web site called Bolt. The listeners were required to agree to Music Lab's consent form, which made it clear that they would be taking part in an experiment. After hearing a song the listeners could choose to download it. The researchers—Matt Salganik, Peter Dodds, and Duncan Watts—kept tabs on the number of downloads of each song. In some experiments the researchers showed this data to listeners, so participants could see which songs were snagged the most. When listeners could see what other people had chosen, a few songs' popularity snowballed, while other tunes languished. Also, by separating the listeners into separate groups, or "worlds," the researchers could see if the same bands would consistently come out on top. The scientists assembled each world to ensure that the groups were similar in terms of age, location, and so on. Though listeners in the different worlds roughly agreed on which songs were best, there was a lot of variation. The study found that when listeners could see how often a song got downloaded, it was actually harder for researchers to predict before the experiment which songs would eventually end up on top. Some songs, such as "She Said" by Parker Theory, consistently won. But others, like "Lockdown" by 52metro, were more volatile. In one world "Lockdown" came in first, with 114 downloads. In another it was 40th, with only 7 downloads. The study suggests that this unpredictability is inherent in a system where people's tastes interact, Salganik says. The researchers published their results in Friday's issue of the journal Science. The Paradox of Success The researchers were motivated to study music downloading to understand a paradox about how things become popular, Salganik said. Take the first Harry Potter novel. "It has been tremendously successful and been translated into more than 60 languages," Salganik said. "That would make you believe Harry Potter is somehow different from all the other books that didn't have nearly this level of success," he said. "But this difference wasn't at all clear ahead of time," Salganik said. Many publishers, thinking it wouldn't succeed, rejected the book. The same phenomenon shows up with music and movies. "A lot of this unpredictability is invisible" to the public, Salganik said, because it never sees the things that fail. One of the most spectacular bombs, he points out, was Irish singer Carly Hennessy. Record company MCA threw 2.2 million U.S. dollars into producing and promoting her album Ultimate High. It sold only 378 copies in the first three months. "I went online and bought her CD for a penny," Salganik said. "It actually doesn't sound that much different from a lot of other things you hear. It just seemed like she had an unlucky break." Testing, Testing, 1, 2 … The Music Lab experiment was not quite like the real world, Salganik says. Most of the listeners were teens, and there were no celebrity endorsements or advertising to affect the results. Yet the experiment's results are similar to those from mathematical models of the success of movies, said economist David Walls of Canada's University of Calgary. He and economist Art De Vany of University of California, Irvine, have modeled how people tell each other about movies. "When [people] see a movie they like, they make a discovery, and they tell their friends about it," Walls and De Vany wrote in a 1996 article in The Economic Journal. This creates a feedback that unpredictably leads some movies to break out and others to nosedive, Walls said. Sociologist Michael Macy of Cornell University finds the Music Lab study convincing. "They're showing that it's very hard to predict which songs will become popular," he said. "That's not just because we don't know what peoples' tastes are," Macy said. "It's because random fluctuations early on in the reports about what's popular become exaggerated due to the social influence." However, economist Stan Liebowitz, at the University of Texas in Dallas, is skeptical about how much the study proves. To improve the data, he suggests tricking some of the listeners by giving them fake data so that the songs that were actually most popular would appear to be the least popular, and vice versa. Our very own JonnyUps let me have a listen to a four song demo for his band Parker Theory. First off, it is extremely cool that I have the opportunity to have a chance to listen in on the creative process. As a very non-creative person I'm honored that an artist would let me in to see their world. On with the demo, Parker Theory is a San Diego based pop-rock band who's been around for a few years. I first saw them in 2001 when they opened for Switchfoot but they've gone through many changes since. As I listened to their demo I saw a lot of growth. Of the four songs there was a very catchy pop song, a good and heavy rock song and some accoustic work. I always like to hear musicians show off their musicianship so I see good things coming with the next Parker Theory effort. I'm pleased to announce that the new This Holiday Life album, Friction, is now available. The places to get it include the THL web site, Lou's Records in Encinitas (starting on 1/4/06) and M-Theory in San Diego. Check out some samples of Friction check out the THL MySpace area. I don't have the album yet but will be getting it this weekend and can't wait. The CD release party won't be until Saturday January 28 at SOMA near the Sports Arena in San Diego. It is with great honor that I am here today to tell you that San Diego's own NICKEL CREEK was nominated for a grammy! This is one of the highest honors you can receive as a musician. Check out the link above to listen to a couple songs from their new album "Why Should The Fire Die?" My two sons and I attended the This Holiday Life (THL) show tonight with my two sons. It's a very small venue and we were able to really enjoy the show. THL has a new album coming out next month and they played some of the new songs and we are looking forward to it. This blog will keep you up-to-date on the album. For now, take a listen to them on their MySpace area. I'm hoping to make it to this show to hear some new This Holiday Life music. This is a great San Diego band, so, if in San Diego, please give this show a chance. When I spoke to Scott of THL at the Switchfoot concert he was pretty excited about the new album and getting out and playing live again. Vote for the house band Parker Theory, band of our own JonnyUps: Two nights ago I went to a benefit at the Hard Rock Cafe for Katrina relief. Molly Jenson, Jon Foreman from Switchfoot and Sean O'Donnell from Reeve Oliver along with 25 or so other San Diego musicians were to play 2 songs each. One of the last acts was 2 of the members (Sean and Sara) of Nickel Creek so I stuck around because I'd only heard a little of their music (of course our main music guy, JonnyUps, spoke of them here). They proceeded to sing one song with vocals then did an instrumental with just a violin and accoustic guitar. They kicked butt! My next album purchase will be this one: The rest of the night was pretty cool as I did have a bit of time to talk to Jon from Switchfoot and caught up a bit with him. He's such a gracious guy and a person worth meeting. Here's a little story for you... I was standing with Jordan Mancino (drums) and Tim Lambesis (vocals) of local-gone-big metal band, As I Lay Dying last night. They were both ready to go home, and not feeling like they fit in with the crowd at the San Diego Music Awards. They were nominated for the nights biggest honor, Artist Of The Year (along with Switchfoot, Nickel Creek, and other big San Diego names. As their award was being announced, Jordan left to use the restroom. I asked Tim if he was ready to win, and he replied, "We're not going to win..." then he left to use the restroom. He came back after noticing that the line was too long. I said, "Good, because you have to go make a speech now." and he just laughed. The announcer said, "The award for artist of the year goes to.....As I Lay Dying! I know those metal boys are in the crowd somewhere!" Just then, Tim looks over at me and says, "Wow, this is awkward. I didn't expect that..." and he just walked away to the stage in disbelief. My point being...these guys deserved the award. Fresh off of Ozzfest (with Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, Iron Maiden, etc.) they are taking a 2 week break before heading off to Germany, and another non-stop touring year. Their metal-blade release "Shadows Are Security" debuted at #34 on the Billboard 200! And through all of their fame, and touring, and everything else, they still remain Christ-like examples. Their music still reflects their lives and how they are living for a God who is bigger than all of the grime, and the crap. Even though you can't always understand what is being screamed, As I Lay Dying still finds a way to reach the listeners. Through song, interviews, meet and greets. Definitely deserving of San Diego's Artist Of The Year. * from www.AsILayDying.com - 9/13/2005 -- As I Lay Dying just won the Artist of the Year award at this year's San Diego Music Awards. We can't lie....this comes as a total surprise to us, especially when you consider the tough competition we were up against. But then again, considering the award was voted on by you the fans, and considering that As I Lay Dying has the best fans in the world, maybe it's not a surprise after all. Thanks to all of you for the love and support you have given us. As always, we couldn't do it without you.....Love AILD Reeve Oliver Also scored an award. Great job guys! A good night for San Diego music! Be well, and keep rocking, Last night I went to another fantastic Reeve Oliver/Parker Theory show in San Diego. While there I was able to speak with Tracy Johnson who has been mentioned on this site here and here. She has a CD release for "Oceans Under Jupiter" coming up on August 28 at the Casbah in San Diego and our own JonnyUps will be playing in her band. It's time to vote for your favorite San Diego bands for the San Diego Music Awards. Highly recommended picks: I was just notified that Parker Theory. featuring one of my guest bloggers, JonnyUps, has a new video, Leap Year. Give it a look and listen. Clearly, the best drums in rock 'n roll belong to Brad of Reeve Oliver: Sunday Nights at North Coast Calvary Chapel - This Sunday night Phil Wickham will be appearing at our church. If you are in San Diego it is worth the effort. AgnusDei(SATB)(3).htm - An old friend of mine alerted me to some beautifully arranged classical a cappella piece by his brother-in-law. A very nice change of pace for this blog. Nickel Creek...I'm putting this entry under "Music - San Diego" because this next amazing band (#2 in the series of 3 groups referred to me by Heidi Y.) is actually 2/3 from Vista, California...right here in San Diego County! Might I add they are also Grammy winners, and legends in their ever evolving genre of "Newgrass"...a comfortable mix of catchy folk, and blue grass music. Masters of their instruments at only 11 or so, they formed after Sara and Sean (brother and sister) met Chris from a smaller mountain town north of here. They've done their thing for 10 years maybe, and are now forever a staple in the bluegrass scene. Their mentor/producer is Allison Krause, and they have recorded with Dolly Parton and the Dixie Chicks. If you know me, I'm far from a country boy. So I know that anybody who appreciates catchy, yet complicated (and even simple at times) music, you'll LOVE Nickel Creek. For serious. Now kids, here are the links: Nickel Creek All I can say is, please don't let this valuable time of mine go to waste...atleast hit up iTunes when I mention a band. $.99 is a small price for a good thing. I'll try and give a suggested iTunes song to download each time. iTunes Recommended Song - This Side (by Nickel Creek) Be well, and keep rocking... I just got back from a great night of San Diego music. The bands I saw were This Holiday Life, Parker Theory and Reeve Oliver. I also met Tracy Johnson who was featured recently on our site and she was giving out CDs. I got a chance to listen on the way home and it was excellent. First up when I got to the show was This Holiday Life. I've seen them many times before but it had been a while and so it was the first time for me to hear some new songs. These guys really know how to play and they sound unique. The guitar work stands out as I don't see many bands these days doing something different with a guitar. There was a moment though when the lead singer's amp kind of blew out so that cause a little kink in the show. Next week (4/27/05 and 4/28/05) they will be opening for the mighty Switchfoot at Auburn U. and Louisiana Tech. If you are going to just see Switchfoot make sure you get there early enough to see THL and tell then Broken Masterpieces sent you. My main man, JonnyUps' (official musicologist of this site) band, Parker Theory was up next. It was my first time seeing Jon as the bassist for Parker Theory and they were excellent. PT plays all out all the time. I'm still getting familiar with their songs and can't wait until there is a new album out with Jon playing. Keep your eyes on these guys. The last band was Reeve Oliver. OK, the name is really strange but they have reached a point where I think they are ready to hit the big time. It's funny but my family saw the lead singer at his day job at Sea World just the day before. RO brings a lot of fun to the show and they just seem to get what rock is all about. They goof off but do not sacrifice the quality of the music. They don't seem serious but they are so good they must be serious. San Diego has amazing local music and more will be making their way nationally. Keep coming back here for more info. UPDATE: The Reeve Oliver part of the show also featured the first instance of NERDS accompaniment. This concert brings together 3 favorites of this blog; Reeve Oliver, This Holiday Life and Parker Theory featuring our own JonnyUps on bass. Today is the day (and tomorrow is also the day - due to time differences). "What day?" you may ask yourself. Tuesday April 6th, 2005 is the day that Fabtone Records in Japan releases Parker Theory's "Can Anybody Hear Me?" double-disc set featuring 2 unreleased songs (Slow Down, Waiting For You). This double-disc release is the first release on Fabtone Records and is joined by a release from Australian rockers, Jebediah and former featured artist here on BrokenMasterpieces.com, Waking Ashland will be released in early May. Here are some helpful links to anybody interested: Parker Theory [IMPORT] @ Amazon.com Also find Parker Theory on Purevolume.com & Myspace.com To catch Parker Theory live, check www.ParkerTheory.com or come to our next show on April 23rd at the Soma in San Diego! Listen to 91x from now until April 23rd because they are giving away 100 tickets to the show! Thanks for letting me talk about my band on this special day! Be well, and keep rocking... The local band that isn't... Waking Ashland formed at Cal State Northridge but lead singer Jonathan lives in Cardiff (also known for being the home of another Jonathan from Switchfoot). Waking Ashland recently signed to Tooth & Nail, and are currently touring the country. Waking Ashland is piano driven rock. I saw them perform last night and they were great. They are also on the same Japanese label that Parker Theory is on. Please check these guys out. They are great guys, and they make good music. Here come the links, thanks in advance for listening: Waking Ashland Be well, and keep rocking... I just saw an ad for some CNN entertainment show and as part of the ad they had a flash of one of the Switchfoot videos. Very surreal. I'm going to take this opportunity of higher traffic (Thanks to HughHewitt.com) to promote a good friend of mine. I have been told she sounds like Ani DiFanco, whom I have never had the chance of hearing. But I'll take their word for it. I have a special connection to Tracy Johnson because Jesse (lead singer) and Jeff (keys/vocals) from my band Parker Theory recorded/mixed/played the music on this project with Tracy. She also happens to be dating David (drummer of Parker Theory). So, basically, we're all just family here. She's good. Her voice is unique, and she wears it well. Her songs are catchy, and you'll most likely find yourself taking a 2nd listen to her songs. Be well, and keep rocking... Hey Guys! You've probably all heard enough about me by now to know that I am a reader and friend of BrokenMasterpieces.com, and also a local musician here in San Diego. It's an honor to join your family here, and I hope to be a positive addition to your reading experience. In addition, feel free to check out some bands that I talk about. I'll put a link in whenever there is one available, and I'll plug my band Parker Theory as often as you guys will let me. On that topic, Parker Theory will be opening for The Honorary Title at San Diego's famous Casbah tonight. (You may remember The Honorary Title as the opener for Switchfoot on their most recent US Tour.) Thanks again for allowing me to type, edit, and plug myself in the world of Broken Masterpieces. Be well, and keep rocking... I've opened up the blog to a couple of guest blogger. JonnyUps will introduce himself soon but he's going to be reporting about anything musical. Please welcome him aboard. Yesterday, a couple of co-workers and I went to the restaraunt of blink-182, Sombrero Mexican Food. While we were in there I recognized one of the other patrons, Phil Wickham and his father John. I've seen Phil a few times at Maranatha Chapel in Rancho Bernardo, a San Diego suburb. Phil is an amazing worship leader and writes great songs. His music is pretty mellow but not cheezy mellow. In some ways his music reminds me of Jars of Clay. Check out his samples on his web site. My good friend JonnyUps has moved from Roosevelt to Parker Theory. This is a big change for him but he's been a fan of Parker Theory for a long time I know it is a dream come true. Good luck my friend. San Diego Padres : Fan Forum : Make sure to consider the song by Roosevelt and Sean O'Donnell of Reeve Oliver. One of San Diego's top local bands, Noise Ratchet, is breaking up. Their last concerts are next weekend. For more information go here. I spoke with their bass player, Jon Jameson, earlier today and it sounds like they are taking a new and exciting direction. Broken Masterpieces wishes all the members of NR the best. Just by a guess I did a search for Reeve Oliver on Amazon and they had something: Check out the samples and check out my review at Amazon. I just found out that Switchfoot will be on the Letterman show on Wednesday night, September 29. They will be performing the song "Dare You To Move". Hopefully they get to do the full song but some of these shows make them cut it short. Take a look at the VH1 Switchfoot page and check out the video titled "Dare You to Move (Version 2)". Powerful song, powerful video. My friend Jon from the excellent San Diego band Roosevelt brought me to the show last night to help out with moving equipment on and off stage. This was a great opportunity and they even let me bring my oldest son (little does he know how cool this is). There wasn't a lot of real work to do but I got to observe and meet various members of all the bands (Roosevelt, This Holiday Life, Something Like Silas, Parker Theory and Reeve Oliver. One thing all these bands have in common as they are a bunch of really nice people. (Roosevelt was first and they sounded great. They are getting very comfortable as a band and it shows in their music. This Holiday Life sounded great and did a very gutsy cover of "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" by U2. Great job! I missed most of Something Like Silas and Parker Theory (my son was tiring) but they will be watched by this blog. I hope to see them again. Reeve Oliver was terribly impressive. I think this band will be breaking through soon. Their new album is fantastic. Thanks again, Jon for the great opportunity. UPDATE: Another thank you to Jon for the shout out during the concert before they played "Slow Down". UPDATE 2: Many thanks to the young lady at the Reeve Oliver merch table for getting autographs for my son. She went way above and beyond the call of duty. Broken Masterpieces will be there for sure. Right click and hit "Save As..." to download these great songs from my friends at Roosevelt music. The guys of Roosevelt have completed the demo I mentioned in this post. Check out the last to songs on this page. Great job Roosevelt and props to producer/engineer Tobias Miller for bringing out the best in them. I had the opportunity to go into the recording studio with San Diego band, Roosevelt tonight. Once the kids went to bed my wonderful wife let me go hang out with some future rock stars. I've never been in a recording studio so it was something new and cool. Roosevelt has a unique opportunity to work for producer/engineer Tobias Miller so they are recording 2 songs for a demo. Fortunately, their song Slow Down is one of the songs they are re-recording and is one of my favorite songs right now. To hear some older versions of Roosevelt's music check out purevolume. Much thanks to Roosevelt for allowing me into their world for a bit. The San Diego Music Awards have announced their nominees and a major omission has occured. The band, Roosevelt, was not nominated for any awards. Please help fix this by going to the web site and write them into the Best New Artist and Best Rock categories (and vote for Switchfoot under Artist of the Year). I got a real cool phone call from my friend Jon (from Roosevelt) and he told be that the number of page hits to the band site from Broken Masterpieces was 986! Thanks to everyone who's done some clicking. Also be sure to check out some other great San Diego bands like Reeve Oliver, This Holiday Life and, of course, Switchfoot. Her web site doesn't have much but Molly Jenson has an absolutely amazing voice. She's working on an album right now. I had a chance to talk to her at the Switchfoot show tonight (more on that later) and didn't know she'd been making such great progress. Keep your ears open for Molly. I was finally able to see my friends (Jon) band, Roosevelt in concert. It is so refreshing to see a band that can actually play and sing after seeing what's been going on with stuff like the Super Bowl half-time fiasco. Roosevelt is a bunch of early 20's guys that play great guitar driven rock. No wizbang stuff, no silly fashion statements, no manufactured "songs". I'm hopeful that these guys can catch a break and have a chance to make an impact. BTW, one of our local fishwraps had a good write-up on them. Last night I had the pleasure of attending a CD release party for This Holiday Life, a band from San Diego. I enjoyed seeing them live (even though it was way too loud and my son was miserable) as I'd thought some of the parts of their music was piano but was actually a guitar. Really great music and got to meet some more members of the band Roosevelt who will be having a CD release on 2/21 at SOMA. If you go to the the This Holiday Life web site you can hear a lot of their music. Lots of great things going on with my favorite local bands. Please check out the web site for the band, "This Holiday Life". I met one of the band members at church today. My friend, JonnyUps' band, Roosevelt, is playing a concert with one of the best bands in San Diego, Reeve Oliver. They are even playing at my old college Point Loma Nazarene University. Here's the flyer for you San Diegans. My friend's band, Roosevelt, has a new song on mp3.com. Check it out here. A friend of mine is in a new band. The bands' name (at least today) is called "Best Case Scenario". Go here to take a listen. UPATE: The band is now called Roosevelt.September 18, 2007
